About RLEI

The Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative (RLEI) emerged as a community idea back in 2008 during the Annual NeighborWorks America Community Leadership Institute that took place in San Jose California where neighborhood residents expressed the need to tackle issues with problem properties that were affecting entire neighborhoods.

How It Works

RLEI process

Each problem property case is uniquely managed by RLEI staff with the support of the partner organizations, tenants, neighbors and cooperative property owners using a blend of methods including mediated conversations between involved parties, legal advisement and assistance and other strategies as necessary until a sustainable solution is reached.

Why Connect With RLEI?

When a property in your neighborhood has become a longstanding nuisance or source of danger. When a dilapidated or abandoned property is affecting the quality of life of the residents adjacent or nearby. When there is an irresponsible property owner or landlord who does not comply with his contractual obligations .When there is a responsible landlord who needs assistance in dealing with tenants who are continuously disturbing the peace of the neighborhood.

When to connect with RLEI?

When you feel it is time to act because an irresponsible property owner or slum landlord does not want to take action to resolve the issues generated by their negligence.

What can RLEI do for you?

RLEI can help you approach absentee landlords and convince them to commit to care about the neighborhood by improving the physical and social conditions at their properties. RLEI can help look at the issues generated by irresponsible property owners and can help build an action plan to provide support to find a long term solution to the issues.

How To Submit A Case

Step 1

Log into www.RLEI.org. Go to the registration window. Fill out the registration information that will allow you to obtain a user name and a password.

Step 2

Once you have a user name and a password, you will receive an automated email with your login information.

Step 3

Carefully read all the steps to successfully submit a complaint. These steps will help you to describe the problem and the property that is causing unrest in your neighborhood.

Step 4

Follow the prompts and describe the issues to validate the complaint.

Step 5

Your petition to request RLEI support must include at least ten neighborhood residents whom are also affected by the problem property, including yourself. Towards the end of the request for support you will find an input area where you can identify these fellow petitioners via email. If you don't have access to email addresses, you can refer the affected residents to the www.RLEI.org website where they'll be able to create a profile and become a petitioner by looking up the problem property's address.
